A Look at New Media and Public Relations

Unarguably the greatest change in how companies function nowadays is in public relations. Whereas in the past, a business would rely on printed media like magazines, newspapers, and industry journals, these days there is the internet. This has hugely impacted on how firms deal with public relations. With the advent of blogging, all of a sudden we’re reading casual updates direct from the head chiefs instead of the usual polite, conventional editorials ordinarily located in their corporate brochure. Not only that, but we’re hearing more from firms too, as websites are perpetually updated. With the recent introduction of sites like Twitter, commercial enterprises are also microblogging too.

Not only that, but the internet has made affairs much less passive and much more proactive. Now those browsing the net actively vote for your advertisement by clicking it, or sign up to your emailing list, or ask questions immediately to you via your website contact forms. With this activity, we understand a lot more regarding target markets due to their “footprint” they leave behind with such activity. Thus it’s essential that a company can react to the responses left by their website visitors and form their messages based on this feedback.

So with these changes, does that mean companies have much greater opportunity to determine how the general public perceives them? Absolutely it does. Businesses are now putting aside more and more time on public relations, as so many new “public meeting places” have opened up with technological advances. With that increased control and opportunity however, there is the increased risk of making mistakes too, and so we are of the opinion that it is better to hire a public relations firm to start with. There is much to learn from them. For example, how do they use the internet? They have acquired experience in understanding what is successful, and what isn’t successful. They can speedily identify your weaknesses and bolster your strengths in terms of your relationship with the public. A good place to get started with in terms of finding a PR company is Google. Just enter a key phrase like public relations and you will see a list of public relations organizations ready and willing to serve your requirements.
